Comic Review: IDW Deviations: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

So it all comes to en end.  The IDW Deviation series started early in March, With Ghostbusters, and saw some of the most recognizable franchises from the 80s and 90s have some slight changes.  While the results were hit & miss the ideas presented were all pure gold.  Closing out with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a definite good idea.  Unlike all the other stories the TMNT: Deviation was about a point in the current run of continuing comics from IDW.  All bases on the time in the series where Leonardo was brainwashed and this was the end result...

If you havent read the comics and are child of the 80s, I am sure that image is pretty mind blowing.  Dont worry, mind-control is broken and all ends up well, full spoilers for a 2+ year story by the way,  However in the Deviation it is psoited, what if Shredder went for 4 for 4 in the brainwashing department?  The end being the eye grabbing cover of the issue.

Once again, mind-blowing.  As you can guess this is a some what dark story, and the art accompanying it really helps get that point across.  It hearkens back to the art style original style made famous by Kevin Eastman in the early 80s.

Aside from that the story in this is great, with out giving too much away it breezes along in the 40 page story, and does a great job of truing the entire universe on its head, and at the end things are bleak for the "heroes".  However that is where I am a bit disappointed.  All the other deviations put out by IDW had great stories to tell but the did not leave me wanting more. In this case I feel the story presented would have been great as a 4 issue one shot, so some of the story points could have been fleshed out.

But in the end, this is an excellent story, that takes one of the best stories IDW has published and changes it and turns it on its head with great results.
